Newly appointed Somali National Army chief of staff Gen. Odowaa Yusuf Rage took over the reigns of office at the Defence Headquarters in Mogadishu Monday.
In an event presided over by Prime Minister Hamze Barre, Gen. Odowaa made a formal comeback to the military helm after he exited last year following a change of guard.
He takes over from his successor Major General Ibrahim Muhiydin. Speaking at the event PM Barre lauded the military for the efforts in liberating several villages and towns in central and southern parts of the country from Al-Shabaab control.
Gen. Rage takes over the SNA leaders at a time of major transitions in the security sector. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is ending its mandate in December and will be replaced in January by the African Unions Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM)
